Man Accused Of Sexually Assaulting & Killing Elderly Woman Heads To Trial
FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – A 67-year-old former maintenance man at a condominium community in Pembroke Pines went to trial Monday for allegedly sexually assaulting and killing a 93-year-old woman.
According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Elton Walters sexually assaulted Evelyn Norell, cut her throat, and left her half-dressed body on her bed where her granddaughter later found the body.
Prosecutors told the jury that a Pembroke Pines Detective followed Walters while he was driving erratically the morning after the murder. Police said inside Walters' truck they found a pillowcase and linens stained with blood and a purse containing Norell's belongings, according to the Sun-Sentinel.
The prosecution said it could tie Walters to the defendant through the linens and DNA that was left on the body, according to the Sun-Sentinel.
If Walters is convicted, he faces up to the death penalty for his crimes.
