Mallett Warns Dolphins
MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) - In the days leading up to the 2011 NFL Draft, many draft experts fully expected the Miami Dolphins to trade up in the second round in order to select former Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett.
The Dolphins did trade up for a player in the second round, but it was Kansas State running back Daniel Thomas.
Mallett was instead drafted by the New England Patriots, and his father told the Boston Herald that Ryan won't forget the Fins passing him over.
"They took another guy," Jim Mallett told the Herald. "Ryan said, 'Payback.' He remembers it all."
While it's way too soon to see if Ryan Mallett will ever get payback against the Dolphins, consider the case of Patriots starting quarterback, and Ryan's new mentor, Tom Brady.
Before he was one of the top two quarterbacks in the NFL, Brady took a tumble in the NFL Draft all the way until the sixth round. Countless other quarterbacks were taken ahead of him and were complete busts.
Brady would later tell Patriots owner Robert Kraft that drafting him was one of the best moves he would ever pull off. Brady fed off the fact that he was such a low draft pick to help drive him to become a multiple Super Bowl winner and future Hall of Famer.
While no one is equating Ryan Mallett to the level of Tom Brady, the similarities are there. For the Dolphins sake, they better hope Mallett never becomes half the quarterback Tom Brady is or they will pay for it for years to come.
