Major Storm System Impacting Christmas Day Travel
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – From a major winter storm to possible tornadoes on Christmas Day, the weather is keeping travelers across the country on their toes this holiday season.
The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma is forecasting a strong chance of tornadoes from southeastern Texas across southern Louisiana and into the southern half of Mississippi and Alabama along with the Florida Panhandle on Tuesday.
The SPC said across the area of concern, "long-track tornadoes could occur with supercells that remain discrete and move along the northern edge of instability. In addition, wind damage will be likely with line-segments that organize on the leading edge of the system."
While the system is producing severe weather in the southeast, it will also dump heavy snow along a line from roughly Oklahoma northeast across the Great Lakes and into the northeast. Oklahoma looks to get upwards of 6 inches of snow on Tuesday, making a White Christmas across the area.
Snow should spread across the northeast throughout the day on Wednesday and into Thursday, which could cause problems for travelers trying to get into or out of those areas.
