M-D School Administrators Getting Pay Cut
MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) – Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho has recommended that school district administrators and high-level clerical employees be given a pay cut.
The cut will impact roughly 400 staff members and the move has been approved by the School Board. The move cuts maximum managerial pay grades by 20 percent.
"We must lead by example in these tough times," Carvalho said. "Our administrators, who have already shouldered significant salary reductions in the past three years will again take the lead in absorbing the financial blow."
According to Carvalho's office, the move will save roughly $500,000 in the next fiscal year and millions of dollars in future years.
The district is projected to face an $80 million cut to school funding for the 2011-2012 fiscal year, which starts July 1.
The budget shortfall comes after the Florida Legislature decided to cut the statewide education budget by $1.1 billion. The budget cuts will mean each school district will receive roughly $542 less per student than last year.
