Lynn University Honors Six Killed In 2010 Haiti Earthquake
BOCA RATON (CBSMiami/AP) – Lynn University students concluded a week of community service events Saturday by honoring the four students and two professors who died in the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.
The main focus on Saturday's third annual Knights Unite Day of Caring was on remembering the legacy of the six, who traveled to Haiti on the Journey of Hope. Eight other students on the trip were not injured.
"In an effort to honor the lives and work of all those who went to Haiti, Lynn University commits itself to a day of service and remembrance of Stephanie Crispinelli, Brittney Gengel, Christine Gianacci, Courtney Hayes, Dr. Richard Bruno, and Dr. Patrick Hartwick," wrote Phil Riordan, Lynn's vice president of Student Life, in a campus-wide email.
The events began at 8:30 a.m. as Lynn volunteers planted trees along the water's edge at Grassy Waters Preserve in West Palm Beach.
At 11 a.m., volunteers packaged meals for underprivileged children in the Green Center on Lynn's campus. Then, at 4 p.m., an ecumenical service was held in the school's Amarnick-Goldstein Concert Hall.
Finally, the school rang six church bells at exactly 4:53 p.m., the moment the earthquake hit three years ago.
All week long, students, faculty and staff took part in food drives, a beach cleanup, a tree planting, house painting and other service projects.
