Low-Income Ninth Graders To Get New PCs For $25
MIAMI (CBSMiami) — Low-income Miami-Dade students entering 9th grade have an opportunity to start school armed with a brand new computer.
For just $25, the students can purchase the new tool for high school.
A federally-funded grant for the LINK (Learn Ideas, Navigate Knowledge) computer literacy program makes it all possible.
According to a news release, over one million dollars was set aside for the program, which the district says will enhance students' Internet access from home.
Students will be selected to participate in the LINK program through a random lottery.
To qualify for a new netbook:
- Incoming 9th-grade students must be enrolled in the free or reduced-price lunch program
- Parents must apply to the LINK program online through the Parent Portal here before September 21*
- Parents must also attend The Parent Academy's free but mandatory training course
* If parents do not have a Parent Portal account, they must visit their child's school to receive a PIN number and to register.
The Parent Academy course will educate parents on computer basics, provide tips on how the Internet can help in daily life and inform parents how to keep their kids safe online.
Computer training and distribution events will be held at various locations throughout the fall.
