Look To The Skies Saturday For Meteor Show
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - If you are an insomniac or an early riser, or if you just like cool things in the sky, turning your eyes to the sky early Saturday could bring you a stellar treat, in the form of the Orionid meteor shower.
Formed from debris left behind by the passage of Hally's comet, the small pieces of space debris are captured by the Earth's atmosphere every year when they intersect with the Earth's orbit. The debris burns up in the atmosphere, becoming what astronomers call a meteorite. If the rock is large enough to survive it's trip into the atmosphere with9out totally burning up, it becomes a meteor.
Most of what stargazers will see is a quick flash of light as the debris burns up.
The peak viewing times are between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m.. You'll get your best view by looking to the southeast, away from bright lights.
