SWEETWATER (CBSMiami) – A fun night of shopping and dining turned quickly after reports of shots fired at Dolphin Mall on Saturday night.
Sweetwater Police placed the popular mall on lockdown as panicked shoppers ran for the exits at around 10 p.m.
The lockdown was lifted after about an hour, with many people stuck inside stores and restaurants as police investigated.
Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jose "Pepe" Diaz confirmed no shots were actually fired.
"It brings the worst possible thing to your mind, and all you wanna make sure is whatever you can do to help," said Diaz. "But the most important thing is information and that people understand that that wasn't the case, and everybody's pretty much safe."
Police say the incident was a fight and at least one person is in custody.
That person is 31-year-old David Andrew Smith.
He has been charged with aggravated battery and resisting arrest without violence.
Smith was booked into jail just before 4 a.m. on Sunday.
As for Dolphin Mall, it is open as usual for Sunday shoppers.
