Local Vets Care For Cat Caught In Pipe

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- A cat stuck in a pipe for more than 48 hours is now being cared for at a Miami animal clinic.
The cat whose been newly christened "Piper" is in the care of staff at Knowles Animal Clinic and will soon be set to be adopted.
"He has no broken bones, no pneumonia, his x-rays are normal, clean," says veterinarian Dr. Emily Abraham.
On Tuesday, crews worked tirelessly all day and finally freed Piper in the evening after she had been spotted in a drain in the parking lot of a Walgreens located at 655 NW 57th Avenue the evening before.
Employees of the store had noticed the cat in a pipe and called for help on Monday around 11 p.m. Witnesses said they heard meows.
Miami Fire Rescue showed up to the site but said they didn't see anything and left.

The next morning, employees for the convenience store saw the cat was still in the drain. That's when fire crews came out again and started working on getting the cat out of the drain along with plumbers.
Lory Nelson who is the outreach Manager for Knowles Animal Clinics was called to the scene.
"When I got there they had been trying for eleven hours. It took us another three hours to get him out," said Nelson.
Nelson said they fashioned a lasso and on the second try they managed to get it around the neck of the cat and pulled him to safety.
"It's a little life. You can't just walk away," said Nelson.

Neighbors who live in the area believe the kitten fell in through an open draining hole.
Dr. Abraham said she believes Piper was a stray.
"It's a very strong, resilient cat. Only a cat could have survived that scenario," said Dr. Abraham.
Piper will be put up for adoption in about two weeks.
