Local Student Recalls Terrifying Time In Egypt
MIAMI (CBS4) - A South Florida college student has quite the story to tell after she was stuck in Egypt during hostile protests.
Amanda White-Labora, 21, was trapped in Alexandria, Egypt for eight days as thousand of rioters took to the streets demanding President Hosni Mubarek step down as the controversial leader of the Middle Eastern country.
White-Labora attends Brown University and was in the country as an exchange student. She spoke to CBS4 News after she landed at Miami International Airport, saying it was a surreal experience as the turmoil unfolded around her.
"Mubarek cut off all cell phones access and internet so we were stranded, separated. Unable to communicate with each other," said White-Labora.
White-Labora's mother, Miami Dade Judge Deborah White-Labora, was worried about her daughter's safety while they worked with airlines to try and get her home.
Now safely on American soil, White-Labora is recounting her terrifying experience.
"Buildings are on fire, violence is escalating. The Army has taken over. People are under curfew, it's impossible to have a normal life," said White-Labora.
