Local Artists' Poetry To Be Embedded In Key West Sidewalks
KEY WEST (CBSMiami/AP) — People in Key West will see more than just turquoise waters around Key West, they will now see a new sight as they walk the sidewalks - poetry.
Local writers' verses will be permanently embedded in downtown sidewalks for walkers to read.
The first two of 17 poems, chosen from more than 200 submissions, were unveiled Friday by the city's Art in Public Places Board. They were inscribed into laser-cut forms and stamped into wet cement by city workers.
Both "sidewalk poems" recall Key West's literary heritage. One lies outside Captain Tony's Saloon, the former home of Ernest Hemingway's 1930s hangout, Sloppy Joe's Bar.
The other honors the late author/songwriter and island resident Shel Silverstein, who penned the best-selling children's poetry book "Where the Sidewalk Ends."
The remaining 15 poems are to be etched as the city pours new sidewalks or replaces damaged sections.
