Loaded Shotgun, Ammo Found At Miami International Airport
MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- A loaded shotgun was found Monday inside one of the bathrooms at Miami International Airport.
A senior law enforcement source described the discovery as "scary" and told CBS4's Jim DeFede that Miami-Dade Police, ATF and Homeland Security were all involved in the investigation.
The weapon was described as a pistol grip shotgun with five rounds loaded inside. In addition, two boxes of ammo were also recovered.
The source said the gun was wrapped in a towel and found inside a garbage can in the men's bathroom located near Concourse "D" before the security checkpoint.
The gun was discovered by airport custodian Rudolphe Guerrier.
Guerrier told CBS4's Peter D'Oench that he made the discovery at 3:45 p.m. He took D'Oench inside the bathroom to show him how he made the discovery.
"As I went to change the garbage can, I looked inside and saw the object in the can and then I called police," said Guerrier. "It was wrapped in a towel. Then I put the plastic back around the garbage can."
Guerrier was stunned he found a weapon inside the airport.
"I have never seen that before," he said. "Never."
Airline passengers said they were surprised by the discovery.
"I think it's scary. It's definitely scary," said LeTonya Taylor. "For someone who travels all the time that they were even able to get a gun in here in the airport it's scary, even if they did not get it past the checkpoint."
Airline passenger Anish Kumar said, "They should have security outside and beef up security inside. And they should add to security on the curb outside and at restrooms and have more bomb sniffing dogs at checkpoints. This is alarming."
Investigators are reviewing video from the airport to determine where it came from and who it may belong to.
