Legislature Working On Medicaid Compromise
TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/AP) - Negotiators in the Florida House and Senate are trying to work out a compromise deal that would keep the federal Medicaid money in President Barack Obama's healthcare overahaul law in place while not expanding Medicaid to the level the law originally suggested.
A person close to the negotiations who spoke on condition of anonymity told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the state would use federal funds to cover vulnerable populations like pregnant women and the disabled.
State funds would be used to provide limited health coverage to about 300,000 childless adults, giving them a set amount of money to purchase private insurance. The federal government would have to approve the proposal if it passed the legislature and was signed by Governor Rick Scott.
The House and Senate have been far apart on Medicaid expansion with less than two weeks left in the Legislative session.
