Legislature Set To Allow Major Campaign Finance Changes
TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami) – The Florida House of Representatives is poised to pass a major measure that would allow for an increase in contribution limits for campaigns.
The new bill (HB 569) would allow statewide candidates to accept $5,000 contributions versus the current limit, which is $500. The legislation would also allow legislators to accept contributions up to $3,000.
In addition, the bill lets incumbents keep $50,000 of unspent campaign money for future elections. Currently, the law requires candidates close down campaign accounts after an election.
Democrats tried to alter some of the provisions of the bill, including the contribution limit, but the Republican super majority easily defeated the amendments Thursday.
