Legislators Working On Senate Redistricting Revisions
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (CBSMiami) – The Florida Senate has released a draft revision for the Florida Senate's redistricting map after the previous map was thrown out by the Florida Supreme Court.
The Niceville Republican proposed new lines for eight districts singled out by the high court, including his own. He also suggested the random selection of district numbers, which would be conducted in public with help from the Florida Lottery.
The map had to be redrawn after it was found to violate state Constitutional amendments that sought to prevent gerrymandering to favor different parties.
The Florida House redistricting map was accepted by the Florida Supreme Court before the 2012 legislative session ended.
The new proposal will be presented to Gaetz's committee on Tuesay after the legislature convened a special session Wednesday to work on the fixes to the plan.
Gaetz's committee will submit a revision of the plan to the full Senate for a final vote by the end of the week. The House will then consider it the next week.
Once it's passed, it will then go back to the state Supreme Court to see if it can pass given the requirements o f the new constitutional amendments.
