Lawyer For Winston Accuser Asks Atty. General To Investigate Tall. Police
ZEPHYRHILLS (CBSMiami) – A little more than 24 hours before the Heisman Trophy is set to be handed out; the lawyer for the woman who accused Florida State Seminoles quarterback Jameis Winston criticized the investigation that ended last week with no charges being filed.
"Do I believe this failure of an investigation was related to the fact that he was on the football team? I do," Carroll said Friday morning.
Attorney Patricia Carroll said Friday that she had doubts about the reliability of DNA tests in the case and faulted detectives for not interviewing key witnesses. Carroll said the lead detective got a search warrant for her client's cell phone and social media accounts, but didn't do the same for Winston and his two friends.
Carroll's comments come a week after State Attorney William Meggs held a press conference featuring laughter and smiling to announce no charges would be filed against Winston. Meggs said there were too many gaps in the accuser's story and said there was multiple DNA on the accuser's body and clothes.
Carroll asked for the attorney general's office to investigate the Tallahassee Police Department's work in the case and said the TPD failed to keep her updated on evidence and other new developments. Carroll said her client's focus right now is on exams, not the case.
While the criminal case is wrapped up against Winston, Carroll didn't close the door to a possible civil lawsuit in the future saying any consideration of such suit right now was, "premature."
