Law Change Eases High School Athletics Rules
TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/NSF) - Gov. Rick Scott has signed a bill curbing the authority of the Florida High School Athletic Association to sideline transferring students.
The measure (HB 1403) would allow transfer students to largely remain eligible in the same year they change schools and would limit the ability of FHSAA to force students to sit for recruiting violations.
Instead, it would crack down on schools and coaches involved in the violations.
Association Executive Director Roger Dearing issued a statement saying the association would work to follow the law. "This legislation grew out of sincere and valid concerns about some specific issues regarding high school athletics in Florida, and we intend to address those concerns in a meaningful way," Dearing said.
