Last Summer Supermoon Over Miami Rises Tonight
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – South Florida is in for another celestial treat Monday night when the third of three supermoons this summer will be visible.
The full moon on September 8th isn't like any other supermoons, it's also a Harvest moon, which is a full moon that occurs closest to the autumnal equinox.
The scientific term for the supermoon phenonmenon is "perigree moon" or the point when the Moon is closest to the Earth in its monthly orbit.
The moon will appear much larger and brighter than normal, especially on the horizon.
While Monday's supermoon won't be the largest of the summer supermoons, that honor went to the full moon of August 10th, it is still quite unique since it coincides with the Harvest moon.
Tonight's Supermoon will rise just after sunset, when it'll appear at its largest.
For 2015, six supermoons will be occurring on Jan. 20, Feb. 18, March 20, Aug. 29, Sept. 28, and Oct. 27. The supermoon happening on Sept. 28 will be the largest of the supermoons in 2015.
