Knife-Wielding Burglar Hits Miami Beach Home

MIAMI BEACH (CBS4) - Police are asking for the public's help to find a knife-wielding burglar who broke in to a home in an upscale area of this city and proceeded to terrify and injure a woman inside the home.

The woman, identified by neighbors as a maid for the homeowners, received minor injuries and was treated on the scene by paramedics after the suspect fled on foot. It's not known if anything was stolen, or if he actually used the knife to injure the victim.

Miami Beach Police searched the area looking for the suspect and put out a BOLO or a "be on the lookout" bulletin for the man with a description of him.

Miami Beach Police spokeswoman, Detective Jenny Velazquez, said the incident happened around 2 p.m. in the 5800 block of Alton Road.

"This is a quiet neighborhood," said next-door neighbor Olga Perez, who has lived in the area for 35 years. "It is very nice. But this happens. This happens everywhere. I was told she was a maid; and police say they got here just in time."

Velazquez told CBS4's Peter D'Oench, "We're looking for a black male, who is mulatto. He speaks Spanish with a Puerto Rican accent. He is about 6 feet tall, in his 40s, with short cropped hair. He was wearing a white shirt and black shorts."

"We just everyone in this area to be careful, be on the lookout for him and locks their doors and call police if they see him or something suspicious," Velazquez continued. "We have been doing a grid search looking for him."

"This is an upscale area. It's pretty scary," neighbor Andrew Brecher told CBS4

Olga Perez, who was visiting said, "We are not living in very good times right now. We have to be very careful. It was very sad to see something like this."

Miami Beach Police urged people to call them or 911 if they saw anything suspicious. They said if anyone had any information about this case or the suspect, call Miami-Dade Crimestoppers at (305)-471-TIPS.
