Kindness Overtakes Sweetwater Gas Station

MIAMI (CBS4) - Driving through the mean streets of South Florida, kindness can be tough to find. But drivers in Sweetwater caught a "kind" break Monday that helped them return to the road in a much better mood.

"I was listening to the radio and they said $2.14 for gas and I came right here, it's a great thing they're doing," explained, Karla Martinez.

A good deal and all part of a community kindness initiative lead by Commissioner Jose "Pepe" Diaz.

"We can't wait till a hurricane or a disaster to come to deal with your neighbors in a neighborly form," Diaz explained to CBS4's Nicole Maristany.

Neighborhood businesses participate by offering special deals to residents. The first, a price drop at the pumps of a gas station in Sweetwater.

The station lowered the price of a gallon to $2.14 in honor of Valentine's Day tomorrow.

"$Two-fourteen, you don't hear of that, that's like an antique seeing a sign that says that," shared Mayor Manuel Marono of the City of Sweetwater.

Local leaders like Marono even rolled up their sleeves to pump gas and wash windows. Neighbors 4 Neighbors joined in the giving spirit, handing out kindness cards to help spread the word.

"It's not all about raising taxes and making laws; it's about giving back to the community to help them out," said Morono.

And it's just the beginning.

From foreclosure assistance to marriage counseling and even tax preparation – everyone can take advantage of free of discounted deals with the goal of having kindness spread throughout the community.

"The people that are watching this should take advantage of and start saying what can I do, what can I do to make a difference today," said Commissioner Diaz.

Those that experienced this random act of kindness agreed.

"It should be done more often, by everybody - not just the businesses," said Martinez.
