Keys Substitute Teacher Found With Child Porn
MONROE COUNTY (CBSMiami) – Not long after an eviction notice was tacked to the door of William Britt's residence in Cudjoe Key, the 55-year-old's life went from bad to horrible.
Britt's landlord noticed child pornography in the substitute teacher's moving box, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.
The 55-year-old is facing multiple counts of possessing child pornography.
According to the Sheriff's Office:
Authorities began investigating Britt earlier in the month as he was being evicted for a 'lack of sanitation and cleanliness'. Britt's landlord saw pictures 'clearly depicting child pornography' in a moving box and notified authorities.
Detectives learned from their investigation that Britt had spent time as a substitute teacher at several schools in the Lower Keys and most recently had applied to be a substitute at Glynn R. Archer Elementary School.
Detectives also learned that Britt was able to move into a recreational vehicle in the RV park at the Sigsbee Naval Air Station following his eviction.
On Nov. 8, Britt was arrested after a traffic stop during which a loaded handgun and a sawed off shotgun were found inside his van, the Sheriff's Office said.
According to authorities, Britt cooperated with investigators and turned over nearly 125 printed images depicting child pornography and told detectives he had numerous computer hard drives and portable USB storage devices containing more images.
Britt told detectives he knows he is "sick," but insisted he never physically touched any children despite being involved with various community groups that hold children's activities, investigators said.
The Sheriff's Office said Britt was charged with 123 counts of possessing child pornography in addition to the warrant that listed seven counts from the initial investigation.
