Key West Coast Guard Gets Fast Response Cutter
KEY WEST (CBSMiami) – Key West now has its own U.S. Coast Guard Fast Response cutter.
Coast Guard Sector Key West held a commissioning ceremony Saturday for the cutter Charles David Jr.
Lt. j.g. Daniel Cahill, executive officer of the Coast Guard Cutter Charles David Jr., served as master of ceremony.
It is the first Sentinel-class Fast Response Cutter to be homeported in Key West.
Coast Guard officials said the cutter is capable of conducting missions such as ports, waterways and coastal security, fishery patrols, drug and illegal migrant law enforcement, search and rescue, and national-defense operations.
David was a Coast Guardsman who was posthumously awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for his actions Feb. 3, 1943.
