Katia Weakens To Category 2 Strength
MIAMI (CBS4) – Hurricane Katia has lost a bit more intensity but is still category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale.
At 11:00 p.m., Katia is located about 325 miles south-southwest of Bermuda. The storm is packing sustained winds of 105 mph and is moving toward the northwest at 9 mph.
This general motion is expected to continue through Wednesday when Katia is expected to take turn to the north-northwest on Thursday. On this forecast track, the center of Katia is expected to move over the western Atlantic between Bermuda and east coast of the U.S. over the next day or so.
Katia, which was once a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale, is expected to weaken further Wednesday night and Thursday.
A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Bermuda. Katia could produce up to two inches of rain over Bermuda.
The National Hurricane Center reports while Katia poses no threat to land in the next 48 hours those on the eastern seaboard and Bermuda should keep an eye on it.
Large swells generated by Katia are expected to affect parts of the East Coast, Bermuda, the Greater Antilles and the east facing beaches of the Bahamas over the next few days.
Forecasters warn Bermuda could start to feel the effects of the storm in the form of rip currents and life threatening surf this week.
