Katia Downgraded To Tropical Storm
MIAMI (CBS4) – Katia has lost a little of it's strength as of Thursday evening and has been downgraded to a Tropical Storm as it spins westward across the Atlantic.
At 11 p.m., the center of Katia was about 830 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands. The system's maximum sustained winds were holding at 70 mph as it moved to the west at 16 mph. Tropical Storm force winds extend 140 miles from the storm's center.
Currently there are no watches or warnings in effect associated with this storm.
Katia is forecast to continue its west-northwest trek over the next couple of days with a gradual decrease in speed. The National Hurricane Center predicts it could become a major hurricane by this weekend.
Swells generated by Katia will begin affecting the Lesser Antilles by Friday. These swell could cause life threatening surf and rip currents.
