Katia May Be Hurricane Sunday, Forecasters Say
MIAMI (CBS4) – Assaulted by high winds in the upper atmosphere Saturday, Hurricane Katia once again dropped to tropical storm strength as it continued to chug westward across the Atlantic, but forecasters now say the storm could regain Hurricane status Sunday, as it moves into an area favorable for intensifying.
At 11 pm Saturday, the center of Katia was about 400 miles ENE of the Leeward Islands. The system's maximum sustained winds are 70 mph, as it moved to the northwest at 10 mph.
Tropical Storm force winds extend 140 miles from the center.
Katia is forecast to continue its west-northwest trek over the next couple of days with a gradual decrease in speed. Forecasters say it could again strengthen to hurricane status.
Currently there are no watches or warnings in effect associated with this storm.
