Kaely Camacho Remembered During National Crime Victim's Week
MIAMI (CBS4) - The community continues to rally around the family of the 13-year-old girl killed in a DUI crash along the South Dade busway.
And now, Kaely Camacho's parents are finding strength from others who know their pain all too well.
The Camachos participated in an emotional ceremony as part of National Crime Victims' Rights Week.
United in their shared grief, the families of dozens of crime victims gathered to honor and reflect on the lives of their loved ones at the State Attorney's Miami office.
The Camachos sat and listened as the loved ones of dozens of victims shared their stories of loss and hope.
The mother of Sherdavia Jenkins, the 9-year-old girl killed while playing on her front porch in Liberty City in 2006.
Sherron Jenkins says the community's support has helped her cope with the loss of her daughter over the last six years.
State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle encouraged victims to become advocates for others and offered words of solace to the family of Kaely Camacho.
The teen was killed April 13th when the family van she was riding collided with the SUV police say Sandor Guillen was driving at 100 mph in the South Dade Busway.
Guillen is charged with DUI manslaughter. He was released from jail on bond Wednesday.
While the events of 2 weeks ago are still fresh in the minds of the Camacho family, Kaely's father says his pain is no greater than anyone at today's ceremony.
"The main thing here today is that I don't want any of these people who are also victims to feel that we're overshadowing what they're going through," Kirk Camacho said after the ceremony. "They hurt just as bad or worse than us, and I just want that to be said."
Then he turned to the crowd and said, "I love all you guys and sorry for your losses as well."
When asked about Guillen's release from jail, Kirk Camacho chose not to comment.
He instead thanked the community for its continued support.
