WEST PALM BEACH (CBS4) – Authorities at a West Palm Beach detention center are investigating the death of a juvenile who died while in custody.
The Florida Department of Juvenile Justice reports that the inmate died Sunday morning at the Palm Beach Regional Juvenile Detention Center. The department and West Palm Beach police are investigating the cause of death.
Department of Juvenile Justice Spokeswoman Samadhi Jones said the name of the juvenile inmate cannot be released under state law. However, Maritza Perez of Fort Pierce told the Palm Beach Post News that investigators told her the victim was her 18-year-old son.
He'd been charged with violating his probation June 28. According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, he had been arrested six times in Palm Beach and St. Lucie counties since May 2008 for offenses such as burglary, larceny and marijuana possession, stated the Palm Beach Post. Maritza Perez told the paper her son was due to be released this week.
