Just Less Than 100 Million Expected To Travel Over The Holidays
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The holiday travel season is about to hit overdrive this weekend as people head home for the holidays across the country by land and by air.
Miami International Airport said Friday it expects more than 2.1 million passengers to travel through the airport during the 17-day holiday period from December 21 through January 6. MIA said it expects roughly 123,500 per day which is about 15-20,000 more than a normal day.
According to AAA, approximately 94.5 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home during the holiday season. Ninety-one percent of those Americans will hit the road as holiday travel is projected to decline slightly from 5.61 million to 5.53 million.
AAA said that median spending on a trip, including transportation, lodging, food, etc, during the holidays will rise to $765 per travel party, up from $759 one year ago.
The average distance of a trip this year will increase from 760 miles in 2012 to 805 miles in 2013.
