Jury Selection Resumes For Casey Anthony Trial
CLEARWATER (CBS4) - Jury selection resumed Monday in Clearwater for the murder trial of Casey Anthony.
So far, twelve jurors have been picked, including four on Saturday. But one potential juror was bounced over the weekend thanks to social networking.
As prospective jurors answered questions on Saturday about their background and qualifications to serve, lawyers instantly checked their responses against postings on online media sites such as Facebook and Twitter.
It seems to have paid off. Prosecutors successfully challenged the seating of one prospective juror who they said had tweeted after a fender-bender, "Cops in Florida are idiots and completely useless."
Attorneys would use that to show the prospective juror might be less likely to accept the testimony of police officers as true.
The case needs 12 jurors and eight alternates to start, but Orange-Osceola Chief Judge Belvin Perry says he'll start swearing in jurors when they reach 15.
Anthony is accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, in 2008. Anthony has pleaded not guilty and says a babysitter kidnapped the toddler. The trial will be held in Orlando, but jury selection was moved to Clearwater in the hope of seating an unbiased jury. Jurors will be sequestered during the trial that's expected to last six to eight weeks.
