Jury Selection In Miami Muslim Cleric's Terror Support Trial
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Jury selection is set for Wednesday for the trial of two South Florida Muslim clerics accused of funneling funds to the Taliban in Pakistan.
Hafiz Khan, 77, who led a Miami mosque, and his son Izhar Khan, 26, an imam at a Margate mosque were arrested in May 2011 on federal charges of supporting terrorism.
The Khans are accused of wiring at least $50,000 to the Pakistani Taliban.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, the money sent by this group was used to buy guns and fund a madrassa (religious school) owned by Hafiz Khan which sheltered terrorists and trained children to kill Americans.
Potential jurors will fill out questionnaires before U.S. District Judge Robert Scola Jr. questions them on their attitudes towards Islam, terrorism and other possible biases, according to the Sun-Sentinel.
Khan and his son are charged with four terrorism support-related crimes. The charges each carry potential 15-year prison sentences.
