Guilty Verdict For Man Who Set His Girlfriend On Fire
BOYNTON BEACH (CBSMiami) - The man who drenched his girlfriend with gasoline, and then set her on fire at a Boynton Beach 7-Eleven last year, was found guilty for attempted murder by a jury Wednesday.
Roosevelt Mondesir, 53, according to the Sun Sentinel, wrote a letter to the judge insisting that he didn't have intentions of killing his girlfriend and mother of his son, Naomie Breton, on June 11, 2012 when the incident, caught on surveillance, occurred.
When the guilty verdict was announced Wednesday, the paper reports that Mondesir showed no reaction.
Circuit Judge Stephen Rapp plans to sentence Mondesir on August 23rd.
Mondesir is facing life in prison for his for the conviction as well as one count of attempted first-degree murder with a deadly weapon and five years in jail for domestic aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
According to reports, Breton, 35, was meeting with the father of her then 4-year-old son in the parking lot at 3 a.m. as part of a shared custody agreement. When Mondesir showed up, their son was not in the car. Instead he brought a container of gasoline and a machete.
Surveillance video outside of 7-Eleven shows Mondesir chasing Breton with the gas before dousing her with gasoline, according to the probable cause affidavit. Breton then ran inside but Mondesir was able to pull her outside of the store. Seconds later, the video shows her running while fully engulfed in flames.
Breton suffered second- and third-degree burns to her arms, stomach and face.
In July, when Breton returned to work, she was surprisingly not bitter about the father of her child.
"I don't hold any hard feelings against him. When we pray at night we pray for him. I don't want my kids to hold hate in their heart for him," she said.
