Julian Gamble's Inspiration Off & Off The Court
MIAMI (CBS4) - Mixed in with thousands of fans cheering on the University of Miami basketball team, there is one fan that stands out. He is 9-year-old Cameron Powell, nephew of senior Julian Gamble.
The wheel-chair bound boy suffers from Bartter Syndrome and Cerebral Palsy. He can't walk, only speaks a few words and eats through a feeding tube. Powell has undergone 10 major surgeries and is constantly in pain - still somehow he always has a smile on his face.
"If Cameron can wake up in the morning and have to wait to be fed and bathed and dressed, and still have the biggest smile as if he won the lottery, certainly we could continue to have faith and celebrate and embrace the smaller things," said Sarah Gamble, Julian's mom and Cameron's grandmother.
Sarah Gamble has been caring for Cameron since he was born. She said he has become an inspiration for her son, helping him to not sweat the small stuff and giving him the strength to overcome challenges both on and off the court.
"When Julian early on had some injuries I think he just really held on to the fact that if Cameron can do it, I can do it," said Gamble.
When the Hurricanes took home the ACC championship on Sunday, the first thing Julian did was run into the stands to hug and kiss him mom and nephew.
"I was balling my eyes out because I was very overjoyed with that moment," said Gamble. "Cameron has continued to encourage Julian to hang in there, be strong, have faith and just keep working hard."
