Judge Approves Rothstein Deposition
FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) - Sentenced to 50 years in prison after pleading guilty to running a $1.2 billion Ponzi scheme, Scott Rothstein may testify under oath before lawyers who represent the 'investors' he scammed.
On Monday, a bankruptcy judge gave the go ahead for the attorneys to take Rothstein's deposition. Rothstein's testimony could help creditors and investors and maybe boost Rothstein's chances of winning a sentence reduction.
The on hitch would be if federal prosecutors object because it would interfere with their ongoing criminal investigation. Before pleading guilty, Rothstein helped the FBI nab a suspected Italian mobster by recording incriminating conversations between them.
Rothstein, 48, is being held at an undisclosed location as part of the federal prisons' witness protection program.
