John Paul II Cleared For Sainthood
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – John Paul II, the beloved former leader of the Roman Catholic Church, has been cleared for sainthood by Pope Francis. The move came after a second miracle was attributed to John Paul II's intercession.
John Paul II helped reshape the church's image during his time as Pope. He made trips to South Florida, but also famously made trips to Cuba to try and open the country up more to the world and the Roman Catholic Church.
The former Pope was placed on the fast-track to sainthood immediately following his death in 2005. However, John Paul II's time in the Vatican is not without controversy.
Critics have blamed him for not pushing harder to deal with the rampant sexual abuse of children going on in the church over several decades.
John Paul II is expected to be canonized along with Pope John XXIII. According to CBSNews.com, the date of December 8th has been floated as a possible date for the canonization, as it falls on the feast of the Immaculate Conception.
