Jobseekers Turn Out For Job Expo In Davie
DAVIE (CBS4)- Jobseekers trying to get back into the workforce are attending a job expo Friday in Davie.
The South Florida Diversity Job Expo, a community outreach project, is a free event open to the public until 3 p.m. The expo is at The Signature Grand located at 6900 State Road 84 in Davie.
Jobseeker Juan Bolet said he has had to change his game when it comes to looking for a job. He said he made some changes to his resume.
"It has been redone," he said. "Years ago the way you did a resume was absolutely different."
With his updated resume in hand to meet the requirements of today's job market Bolet joined hundreds of other job seekers at the expo.
The expo will hold contests and other features, including speed interviewing segments, best professionally dressed awards, which will be awarded to four jobseekers who are selected and identified as the best professionally dressed candidates. There will also be first arrival awards awarded to the four jobseekers who are first to arrive at the job fair
Organizers said the expo will also host a recruitment seminar on best practices in recruiting and hiring and tips for jobseekers and employees.
"In today's job market it's not one size fits all so it's not one strategy that will close the deal," organizer Nicole Carter said. "You have to be very flexible and you have to have an integrated strategy in order to land the job."
Carter said they hope to help jobs seekers do just that by stressing the basics, and one of the main things is appearance.
"Research continues to show that a significant number of job seekers are losing serious job considerations within the fist 60 seconds of the formal introduction or interview," Carter said. "So what we stress at the job expo today is that old adage that we've heard so many times. First impressions are indeed last impressions."
Job seeker Asiah Keen said he is just out of school. He said he hopes to impress employers representing 25 companies from accounting to retail and the media, including CBS4.
"This is my first job fair," Keen said. "But I sent in a lot of job applications.
