Jimbo Fisher: BCS Is "Retarded"
TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami) – The Florida State Seminoles are one horrible game at North Carolina State away from being in the Bowl Championship Series National Championship discussion. But, with one loss the Noles are not being considered and FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher is sick of the BCS.
"You can only control what you can control which is to go win," Fisher told CBS4 news partner the Miami Herald. "But we're going down the wrong [road]. I think it stinks. I think the BCS stinks. How we go with all these computers and stuff I think we're ruining it."
Florida State's problems are two-fold in 2012. First, when West Virginia backed out of a scheduled game with FSU; the Noles were left with having to schedule a second Football Championship Subdivision school, which hurts them in the computer rankings.
Still, the Noles have scheduled the University of Florida for years as one out-of-conference game and also traveled to Tampa to play the University of South Florida out of conference. Still, the six computer polls ranked the Seminoles this week on average of 18th.
The other problem the Noles have is blowing a 16-0 lead at North Carolina State to lose 17-16 to the Wolfpack.
All of the computers have Clemson, which Florida State pasted earlier this season 49-37, ranked ahead of the Noles. It's led to frustration for Fisher, Seminoles fans, and fans who loathe the BCS.
"I mean it's retarded," Fisher told the Herald. "I was watching them [discuss] the BCS last night [on TV] and someone was saying they'd rather see us playing in the national championship game than someone who was undefeated…I mean the human element, that's the thing we're missing."
Florida State may be the best one-loss team in the country and if not for the Wolfpack, the Seminoles could have been planning for big things in January.
As it stands now, Florida State plays at Maryland this weekend and will likely be playing in the ACC Championship game in December. If FSU wins the ACC Championship, they will be making plans for Miami in January to play in the Orange Bowl.
UPDATE 5:52 p.m.: A few hours after the initial comments, Fisher apologized. He said that it's not the way he thinks and he didn't mean to offend anyone.
