Jets Vs. Dolphins 2013 NFL Week 17 Injury Reports
By Abraham Gutierrez
With an NFL playoff spot on the line for one team and the chance to play the role of ultimate spoiler for the other, it's going to be interesting to see how the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets perform after listing a combined 25 players in their mid-Week 17 injury reports.
For the Fins, Joe Philbin certainly has plenty to smile about, as personnel depth shouldn't be too much of an issue on Game Day. Even though Miami reported 10 hobbled players for this week's finale, none of the injuries were significant enough to cause anyone to miss out on practice.
Miami Dolphins Mid-Week 17 Injury Report
On the offensive side of the football, there are four injured players listed, starting with second-year quarterback Ryan Tannehill (Knee).
Fins fans will be glad to know that the Texas A&M product was able to have full participation in practice this week, despite limited snaps a week ago – also listed as having "Full Participation in Practice" this week were two defensive backs: Safety Don Jones (Elbow) and cornerback Jamal Taylor (Hamstring).
The remaining three offensive players were only able to practice on a limited basis. However, all indications are that running back Daniel Thomas (Ankle) and wide receivers Marlon Moore (Wrist) and Brian Hartline (Knee) will be dressed and ready for action on Sunday.
On the opposite side of the football, Miami detailed six banged-up defenders. While Jones and Taylor were able to take 100 percent of the snaps, the following four names were "Limited" in preparations for the Jets: Linebacker Koa Misi (Triceps), safety Chris Clemons (Knee/hamstring), and defensive tackles Jared Odrick (Wrist) and Paul Soliai (Ankle).
New York Jets Mid-Week 17 Injury Report
In contrast, Rex Ryan was forced to prepare for what could be his final game at the helm of Gang Green with a total of 15 banged-up bodies. Thus, if preliminary reports are any indication, a lack of depth could facilitate ample big-play opportunities downfield for Tannehill and company.
The Dolphins inability to pound the football on a consistent basis, coupled with the Jets proud run-defense, it's very plausible that the outcome of this game hinges on New York's ability to contain the Fins vertical attack.
For defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman, containing Hartline, Mike Wallace and Miami's receiving corps becomes a tough proposition without the services of key defensive backs.
The Jets mid-Week 17 report indicates that cornerback Ellis Lankster (Jaw) and safety Ed Reed (Non-football) "Did Not Participate in Practice" this week – neither did tight end Kellen Winslow (Knee).
It appears that Reed's absence was non-injury related, as the 9-time Pro Bowler simply appeared to have gotten a day off. Nevertheless, Lankster has been nursing a damaged jaw since a 20-30 loss at Carolina three weeks ago.
An additional four Jets players were also limited this week in practice, which could affect both sides of the football on Game Day: Cornerback Antonio Cromartie (Hip), linebacker Quinton Coples (Shoulder), defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson (Finger/shoulder), and wide receiver Santonio Holmes (Foot/hamstring).
Finally, some good news for Jets fans, as the remaining eight players on this week's report were able to have "Full Participation in Practice."
On the offensive side, offensive coordinator, Marty Mornhinweg can count on running back Chris Ivory (Quadriceps/ankle), wide receiver Jeremy Kerley (Elbow), center Nick Mangold (Toe) and tackle Austin Howard (Knee) to help keep Miami's defense honest.
Speaking of the Jets 'D', defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson (Wrist), defensive tackle Kenrick Ellis (Back), and linebackers Demario Davis (Thumb) and Garrett McIntyre (Knee) all took 100 percent of the snaps with the first team, likely leading to active statuses.
While these mid-week reports aren't final, they certainly give fans an inside look at how each team is progressing in their preparations for the most important game of the season.
The final NFL Week 17 reports for the Dolphins and Jets will be issued Friday afternoon, and opening kickoff is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. ET from Sun Life Stadium in Miami, Fla.
