Jets Believe They Can Take Advantage Of Fins Secondary
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – New York Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes has seen the headlines and believes the Jets can run roughshod over the Miami Dolphins secondary.
"With our skills and our speed, we should really take advantage of those guys," Holmes told ESPNNewYork.com.
Holmes' brash talk is a far cry from the last time he was on the field at Sun Life Stadium. In last season's finale, Holmes was benched against the Dolphins and was becoming one of the biggest headaches the Jets had during and after the season.
Now, the Jets have former Miami Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano leading the offense and Holmes has been relatively happy. Still, Sparano's approach has always been to run first and throw later. But Miami's pass defense may give him reason to change that philosophy on Sunday.
The Dolphins defense is ranked 18th in the league in yards allowed, but gave up nearly 400 yards passing to Oakland's Carson Palmer in the team's blowout victory over the Raiders last Sunday. Still, much of the need for Oakland's passing was a big lead by the Fins and no running game at all from Oakland.
The Jets' defense has been surrendering a lot of points, ranked 22nd in the league after two weeks, but has been bailed out by a proficient offense that is seventh in the league in scoring.
Despite giving up a lot of yards, Miami's pass defense has only surrendered two touchdown passes and has intercepted one pass on the young season.
Neither team, or fan base, has any love lost for the other, and the game figures to be a test of just how stout both the Jets' offense and the Dolphins defense are this season.
The game is set to kick-off at 1 p.m.
