Jaguars Release QB David Garrard
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (CBSMiami.com) – The Jacksonville Jaguars have shocked the NFL by telling starting quarterback David Garrard they plan to release him, according to FoxSports.com's Jay Glazer.
Garrard had been expected to be the starting cornerback when the Jags opened the season at home against the Tennessee Titans.
The release of Garrard comes just days after Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio told the Florida Times-Union that Garrard was his starter.
The move also comes just one day after the Jaguars named their team captains and Garrard was not one of them.
The Jaguars now face a dilemma as to who will start the first game. According to Glazer, Luke McCown will be the starter against the Titans.
But, according to the team's unofficial depth chart on Jaguars.com, number one pick Blaine Gabbert is listed as the backup quarterback.
The Jaguars have carried out a similar plan in the past. In 2007, the Jaguars released then starter Byron Leftwich in favor of Garrard.
The soon-to-be former Jaguars quarterback was set to make in the neighborhood of eight million dollars in 2011.
