Jaguars Fire Head Coach Mike Mularkey
JACKSONVILLE (CBSMiami) – The Jacksonville Jaguars hired a new general manager on Tuesday and late Thursday morning the team announced it was now in the market for a new head coach.
New Jaguars general manager David Caldwell fired head coach Mike Mularkey after just one season at the helm. Mularkey's team struggled all season and finished with a 2-14 record and the number two overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.
Caldwell came over from the Atlanta Falcons who have built through the draft for the last several years. The Falcons have drafted quarterback Matt Ryan, left tackle Sam Baker, linebacker Sean Weatherspoon, wide receiver Julio Jones, and safety William Moore to name a few in the past few years.
Caldwell has quite a task in front of him with the Jaguars. He has to build a winning culture with a franchise that's been mired in mediocrity the last few years.
Job number one for Caldwell is finding a head coach and according to profootballtalk.com, Caldwell may turn to San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman to take over the team as head coach.
Once a coach is found, the Jaguars have to address the quarterback position. Former top 10 pick Blaine Gabbert has been abysmal through his first two years in the NFL and doesn't look like the answer at the position.
That means the Jaguars will have to either draft a quarterback or sign a veteran free agent along the lines of Alex Smith. If Roman was hired, bringing Smith with him to quarterback the team would ease the transition at the most important position in the NFL.
The Jaguars are also in perpetual need of defensive line help. The team has not been able to get a consistent pass rush in years and also need help in the middle to stop the run.
