Jacory Harris Gets A Shot With The Eagles
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Former University of Miami Hurricanes quarterback Jacory Harris spent a week looking for a quarterback job in the NFL, but Friday his work paid off.
The Philadelphia Eagles signed Harris Friday to a free agent contract to play quarterback. Harris was undrafted in the seven rounds of the 2012 NFL Draft.
Harris came to "The U" as a highly touted high school quarterback out of Northwestern High School in Miami. But, his career at the U mirrored the doldrums the football program is still trying to get out of in 2012.
At one point in his career, Harris looked like the real deal and some even talked of him as a Heisman Trophy hopeful. Harris' inconsistency and penchant for throwing costly interceptions made his four-year starting career maddening for coaches and fans.
During his time at UM, Harris completed 60 percent of his passes for 8,826 yards, 70 touchdowns, and 48 interceptions. Harris struggled as a sophomore and junior throwing 38 touchdowns versus 32 interceptions combined.
While all Harris wanted was a chance, he still faces very long odds of making the Eagle's 53-man roster this season.
The Eagles currently have quarterbacks Mike Vick, Trent Edwards, Mike Kafka, and third-round draft pick Nick Foles.
Vick has struggled with injuries throughout his career, while Edwards hasn't been able to stick with teams. Kafka served as Vick's backup last season and the Eagles thought enough of Foles to take him in the third round of the draft.
Still, Harris has a shot. What he does with it from there is up to him and the Eagles coaching staff.
