Irene Forcing More Flight Cancellations At Miami, Ft. Lauderdale's Airports
MIAMI (CBS4) – As Hurricane Irene moves in on the southern Bahamas, it's causing flight cancellations at Miami and Ft. Lauderdale's airports.
Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport officials said due to deteriorating conditions in the Caribbean a total of 14 flights have been canceled to or from Nassau, Freeport, Georgetown, Governor's Harbor and Marsh Harbor/Treasure Cay. Airlines impacted are Bahamasair, Continental Connection, JetBlue and Spirit airlines.
Miami International Airport has 23 cancellations due to Irene. Cities impacted included Nassau, Bahamas; George Town, Bahamas; Cap Haitien, Haiti; Freeport, Bahamas; Santiago, Dominican Republic; Providenciales, Turks and Caicos and Port Au Prince, Haiti.
The storm, a powerful Category 3 hurricane, continues to move to the northwest near 12 mph; this general motion is expected to continue through Wednesday night. CBS4 meteorologist Craig Setzer said Irene is forecast to reach category 4 intensity by Thursday morning.
On the forecast track, the center of Irene will move across the southeastern and central Bahamas Wednesday and over the northwestern Bahamas on Thursday.
