Investigators Search Pompano Home Where Pennsylvania Fugitive Was Found
POMPANO BEACH (CBS4) - Where is the money?
We are told that is the question investigators are asking after an armored car driver winds up dead in Pittsburgh and police arrest the suspected killer at a house in South Florida.
Thursday afternoon federal and city investigators from Pittsburgh walked out of a Pompano Beach house empty handed. According to a woman who lives in the home, the investigators wanted to know about stolen loot.
The home is where authorities arrested Ken Konias on Tuesday. Konias is accused of shooting Michael Haines -- his armored car co-worker -- in the head and stealing $2.3 million dollars from Garda Cash Logistics.
Shewona Flowers lives in the home. She told CBS4 that investigators on Thursday wanted to know where the stolen money went.
"Do I know? I don't know," she said. "I didn't know that (Konias) had that type of money."
We're told investigators had already recovered a large portion of the cash Konias is accused of stealing but they want to find the rest.
Flowers said one of the women Konias was sleeping with stole a bunch of it.
"(She) broke in his room and took his money," she said.
Flowers also said investigators asked her and several other people who live here where that woman is but there has been no sign of her.
Investigators didn't have a lot to say to reporters Thursday.
But we did learn from prosecutors that investigators are tracing Konias' steps before he wound up in Pompano.
Prosecutors say Konias claims he killed Haines because his partner pulled on a gun on him in an effort to stop the robbery. But investigators don't believe that.
Reports out of Pittsburgh indicate that authorities want to speak to a Florida cab driver who may have been asked to help Konias flee to Jamaica.
"When he was supposed to be leaving off to Jamaica in I think less than 4 days maybe," said a woman who also lives in the home.
With all this talk about money, Flowers wishes she had known Konias was wanted and that there was a large reward for his capture.
"If there was a reward, I would have been the first person that called," she said.
Broward County Jail officials confirm that Konias has been transferred into federal custody. He has waived his right to be extradited back to Pennsylvania and will likely be sent up north in the next two weeks to face the charges.
