MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A case of vandalism at a South Florida school is under investigation.
As Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School students returned to class Monday, they were confronted by spray painted graffiti on several walls of the school.
"They had it in a couple of different places. They had it in the breezeway. They had it a lot in the gym, mostly the gym," said student Nick Daratany.
Some students believe it's connected to a contentious basketball game at a rival school on Saturday in which McCarthy handily beat the other team.
"I can see why they would resort to this. I mean I'm not saying it's justified at all," commented Jett Lundblad. "Like it's stupid, but I see why they do that."
McCarthy basketball player Sheldon Taylor said he doesn't know what to think after seeing the vandalism.
"I was like, 'That's crazy.' I was upset," he said.
While some of the graffiti was very offensive, police said this isn't a hate crime and they are looking at all the evidence.
The Archdiocese of Miami released statement on the incident saying in part, "There is an ongoing investigation, and so far we have not heard of any formal accusations made."
They added, "Archbishop McCarthy's administration team is fully cooperating with the police investigation by providing documentation of the damage via photos, videos and security videos."
