Monster Cat. 4 Hurricane Ophelia Passes Bermuda
MIAMI (CBS4) -- Hurricane Ophelia continues to strengthen as it passes the island of Bermuda, becoming a Category 4 hurricane with winds about 140 m.p.h.. In a stroke of luck for the island nation, Ophelia passed well to the east, lashing Bermuda with high winds and heavy rains, but nothing compared to the potential power of the storm.
At 8 p.m.. the center of Category 4 hurricane was about 140 miles east of Bermuda and and whipping northward at near 26 mph. Forecasters expect it will continue to turn toward the north, and by Sunday be well on its way to the Canadian maritime provinces. It's expected to be in the area of Newfoundland Monday.
Hurricane force winds extended out 30 miles, well away from the island, which was caught in the tropical storm force winds that extended out 185 miles.
A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Bermuda. Environment Canada has also issued a tropical storm watch for the Avalon peninsula of Newfoundland.
Ophelia is the fourth hurricane of the season.
