Injured Officer's Wife, Doctor Update Condition & Thank Medical Staff
FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – The wife of an off-duty Fort Lauderdale Police homicide detective addressed media Monday afternoon to express appreciation for his medical care.
"We do want to heal and move on. We want to thank everyone involved in this," said Camille Shotwell.
Detective Mark Shotwell has been released from the hospital and will go through rehab for three to six weeks.
Shotwell was shot July 3rd in the parking lot of Maguire's Hill 16 Pub and Restaurant.
Broward Sheriff's officials said Shotwell was on his way home after eating dinner when he ran into restaurant server Christine Menatti in the parking lot. Investigators say she was trying to get away from abusive boyfriend Richard Arruda.
Shotwell intervened and was shot about an inch from his heart, according to a friend.
However, Shotwell managed to squeeze off a shot, which killed Arruda.
Dr. Fahim Habib was also at the press conference to update Shotwell's condition and injuries.
The trauma surgeon said Shotwell was lucky to be near Broward Health and brought in quickly. "I think the outcome was good. He had two operations and is on the road to recovery," said Dr. Habib.
Assistant Chief Raul Diaz plans thanked the medical team at Broward Health Medical Center.
The Broward Sheriff's Office is still investigating the shooting and Fort Lauderdale police are not commenting.
Once the criminal investigation is finished and the State Attorney notifies Fort Lauderdale's Police Chief that it is closed, an Internal Affairs invest begins. Internal affairs will determine whether all policies and procedures were followed.
It is not clear when Shotwell will return to work.
