MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Democratic Representative Wasserman Schultz was re-elected to an eighth House term in Florida's 23rd District.
Wasserman Schultz was first elected to Congress in 2004 and has never lost a race.
During her time on Capitol Hill, she's raised breast cancer awareness, supported clean energy policies, fought for education reform college affordability, and supported environmental protection measures.
Wasserman Schultz spent some of her time Tuesday talking to voters in Broward's Century Village about voting down party line.
"If they want someone to stand up for Medicare and social security and protect their retirement, make sure they elect Democrats all across the country," she said.
She has been outspoken against President Trump, which is why the FBI says pipe bomb suspect Cesar Sayoc used her name on packages and sent them to several critics of the president ahead of the midterms.
Her opponent, former Democrat-- now independent candidate Tim Canova, failed to rack up enough votes to unseat the congresswoman.
"I've been going around the district from polling place to polling place and it has been very encouraging wherever we go," Canova said. "We have a lot of supporters. A lot of people want change. That's very clear."
Canova ran as a Democrat in the 2016 primary but lost. He changed his party affiliation in April of 2018.
Canova and Wasserman Schultz also faced Republican Joe Kaufman, who is no stranger to politics.
Kaufman, a counter-terrorism researcher, had run and lost three previous times against Wasserman Schultz. In fact, he has never won an election.
He spoke to voters about his education platform.
"There's way too much standardized testing, way too little vocational training," said Kaufman. "Kids need to have a good work ethic and that starts from the ground up."
One of Kaufman's campaign talking points was fiscal responsibility, saying we need to reduce spending and expand the economy while not making cuts to essential programs like Social Security and Medicare.
Also running was another independent; Don Endriss who was the least known candidate.
Florida's 23rd congressional district stretches from Weston to the City of Miami Beach and is heavily Democratic.
