Iconic Rooster Disappears From Calle Ocho
MIAMI (CBS4) - Miami Police found themselves dealing with a chicken caper Tuesday in Little Havana.
One of Calle Ocho's iconic fiberglass roosters has disappeared.
This particular one weighs in at 70 pounds and is painted in the stars and stripes of the American and Cuban flags. It is valued at about $3,000.
It was also the pride and joy of Pablo Canton, administrator of Miami's Neighborhood Enhancement Team office in Little Havana. He painted the rooster himself.
"They stole my Cuban-American rooster," said Canton.
According to CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald, the rooster was bolted to a metal plate on the sidewalk in front of El Pub, at 1548 SW Eighth Street.
"Somehow they pried it off, though," Canton said.
Dozens of the artistic roosters have taken up residence on the sidewalks of Calle Ocho, dubbed "Roosterwalk" by artist Pedro Damien, since 2002.
"It's a shame that predators from the neighborhood keep destroying and robbing these popular little works of art," said Damien, in an e-mail to the paper.
