I-95 Open After Crash Leaves 6 People Injured
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Four students are recovering in the hospital after a horrific crash on I-95 Sunday night.
All southbound lanes of I-95 at the 103rd Street exit near Miami Shores were shut down for hours as Florida Highway Patrol investigated the accident.
Florida Highway Patrol officials said the driver of a black Nissan, Cornelius Houser, 21, was speeding when he lost control and crashed.
Houser and Kenneth Chieves, 17, were ejected onto the highway and rushed to Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition.
Kenisha Chieves, 18, and Timanika Robinson, 17, also suffered severe injuries but are stable. Family members told CBS4's Gaby Fleischman everyone is expected to survive.
"I'm hurt about it, scared. They could have been dead, one could have been dead two could have been dead but they made it out alive," said Shay Robinson, the sister of three of the victims. "We are praying for the best outcome."
Robinson said the group was on their way to South Beach when the accident happened. Some suffered broken bones; others had internal bleeding and were rushed into surgery. She said her brother Kenneth may have been blinded after getting gasoline in his eyes.
"For whatever reason, we don't know yet, the driver lost control," said Joe Sanchez with Florida Highway Patrol. "He hit the guardrail then hit the wall then spun and when he hit the wall is when we believe two of the four passengers were ejected onto I-95 then the car spun out of control hit another vehicle."
Two people in the second car were checked out by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue on the scene and are doing okay.
FHP is investigating the cause of the crash, and believe speed was a factor.
