Hurricanes Win Weather Marred Regional To Force Game 7
CORAL GABLES (CBSMiami) – The Miami Hurricanes baseball team has saved their season, for now. Despite battling weather delays for the better part of two days, the Canes staved off elimination in Game 6 of their Regional by defeating Texas Tech 2-1 in extra innings on Monday afternoon.
In a game that began on Sunday afternoon, Texas Tech jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a first inning run off of Hurricanes senior starter Javi Salas. That would be the only run the Red Raiders would score in the game though, as Salas would go five strong innings giving up three hits and striking out five.
The Regional Playoff was lengthened on Sunday thanks to a pair of rain delays. The game resumed following 38-minute delay during the sixth inning, but only long enough for the teams to finish the inning before the tarp was brought back onto the field.
A second delay, this one 79-minutes in length, would get the teams to the beginning of the seventh inning. Miami and Texas Tech would complete the seventh inning, but that would be all for Sunday as the field would once again be covered, this time for good, with the Canes trailing 1-0.
David Thompson's grounder would score Tyler Palmer from third base, tying the game in the top of the eighth. Thompson wasn't done there as he would deliver the game-winning RBI double in the tenth inning off Red Raiders lefty Chris Sadberry. Hurricanes freshman Bryan Garcia pitched all three innings for Miami on Monday afternoon to earn the victory.
Miami will now play Texas Tech in Game 7 on Monday afternoon.
